Mastering Plots and Tracks with FreeScopes: Techniques for Accurate Target Tracking (Video)

Generating and Visualizing Plots and Tracks with FreeScopes

Plots and tracks can be generated with either live radars or the SkySim Radar simulator. The footage in today’s video was captured using the SkySim simulator.

To accurately identify targets, raw data must first be processed to filter out unwanted elements. Various algorithms can achieve this, such as clutter-map subtraction or, as demonstrated in the video, a combination of static threshold and the Kalman filter. Algorithms can be combined in various ways for enhanced performance.

When displaying the processed data on the PPI, targets are represented as plots over time. The current position of a target is marked in orange, with an arrow indicating the speed vector. The arrow's length represents the speed, and its orientation shows the direction. The target’s previous positions are shown as gray history dots. Symbolism for these representations varies across manufacturers and may differ for primary, secondary, or mixed plots.

Challenge

The most significant challenge in generating accurate tracks is associating plots with the correct target. Incorrect associations can distort the speed vector, leading to errors in direction and length. This issue becomes especially problematic when targets are close together and crossing their track, as the algorithm may lose track. To address this, the algorithm allows adjustments to the association gating (or association window) — the maximum distance between a current target and a history dot that can be linked to form a track.

In the video, observe where the algorithm encounters challenges, particularly in complex scenarios. These moments indicate opportunities to optimize the association gating for improved accuracy. Notably, at 50 seconds and 1:09, you can see two crossing target tracks that temporarily challenge the algorithm. This is actually similarly challenging in reality. However such a constellation is rather rare.
