Description

The NextGen Pulse Radar is a true close range pulse radar with a range resolution better than 11 cm, a range up to 25 m and a pulse width of 0.5 nanno-seconds.

The system operates with the SkyRadar FreeScopes Software which provides many scopes (A-Scopes, B-Scopes, PPI), control interfaces and filters. Customers can start small and extend the application over time, just by purchasing and downloading additional modules in our portal. The radar allows for highest flexibility in the learning process, with a very low peak pulse output power (-0.7 to 6.3 dBm).

The radar transceiver is mounted into the horn antenna and can be connected alternatively to a parabolic reflector. The antennas are hardwired on the transceiver card. The transceiver is connected to a microcomputer for Digital Signal Processing. The device can be placed on a rotary tripod.

This system has been developed for training and research in civil aviation, universities and industry. It does not include any special military feature.

Basic Configuration

The system comes in its basic configuration with NextGen 8 GHz FreeScopes Basic I, providing features like

  • Tx Power Control
  • STC,
  • FFT (1-dimensional),
  • Static Threshold
  • CFAR (1-dimensional)
  • IQ data blocks
  • MTI
  • Contrast

The users are enabled to do manipulations independently on their computers. Free floating panels of the FreeScopes Control Center allow each student to set up his own signal conversion chain, analyzing raw data, data after FFT, STC etc.

Extended Configurations

The system can be supplied in a package with several extensions of FreeScopes or it can be extended progressively:

  • NextGen 8 GHz FreeScopes Basic II with 3D-Scope, Heatmap CFAR (2-dimensional), RCS, FFT (2-dimensional), Windows functions, Spectrogram, etc.
  • NextGen FreeScopes ATC I including radar plots, radar tracks, MTI with Post Processing, MTD, MTD with Doppler Filter
  • NextGen FreeScopes ATC II including Kalman filter, clutter map, signal delay block, add and subtract, etc.
  • NextGen Artificial Intelligence I including AI Solutions for image recognition and classification
  • Programming Interface from FreeScopes to MATLAB, PYTHON and other numerical computing environments.
The FreeScopes applications in the 8 GHz get active in a plug-and-play approach, as soon as the radar on its own, or in conjunction with the SkyRadar CloudServer are plugged in.

Topics

The following subjects can be trained with the system, depending on the included FreeScopes Packages:

  • Experiments on Pulse and Emission Power
  • Experiments on A-Scope, B-Scope and Plan-Position-Indicator (PPI)
  • Calibrating a radar using amplification, filters and settings
  • Experiments in a fixed position as well as through panning and rotation (rotary tripod required)
  • Doppler Effect
  • Fast Fourier Signal Transformation (FFT) and its effects.
  • Clutter processing e.g., through Sensitive Time Control (STC), Threshold limitation or C-FAR
  • Radar Cross Section (RCS) analysis allowing for an understanding of the varying detectability of objects based on material, absolute and relative size, reflection angle, distance and strength of the signal.
  • Allows analyzing performance and false alarm tolerances through adjustment of the sensitivity.
  • Adjustable decision threshold allowing for experiments on background noise.
  • Moving Target Indication for clutter elimination
  • And much more.

Parts

The PSR Base Module consists of:

  • one (1) Pulse Radar Module, including
o   one (1) digital signal processing unit (DSP) / microprocessor in a steel-case
o   one (1) transceiver with hardwired antennas mounted into a horn with variable inclination
o   one (1) parabolic antenna with variable inclination
o   one (1) motor control unit (only activated when rotary unit is added)
  • one (1) cable set.

Prerequisite

  • Computer with latest HTML5 enabled browser. Current versions of Chrome, Firefox, MS Internet explorer, Opera and Safari are able to read HTML5.
  • SkyRadar FreeScopes (comes free with the SkyRadar Base Unit).

Extensions

The SkyRadar PSR Base Module is accessible by an unlimited amount of concurrent users. The broad coverage of solutions useful in ICAO and EuroControl ATCO and ATSEP training programs as well as IATA qualifications makes SkyRadar the preferred choice of many aviation academies and IATA TrainAir Plus accredited institutions. Many universities and military academies use the PSR Base Module within their qualification, education, training or research programs.
