An important ATSEP task is detecting errors and degraded performance rapidly, and in an ideal case switch over remotely from the defect subsystem to a fallback solution.
In the past, ATSEP needed to rapidly move to a site, where the root cause of some system degradation was suspected. It was often like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Today, dense airspaces and traffic require more efficient and faster solutions. In modern curricula and in EASA's Easy Access Rules (e.g. ATSEP.QLF.SMC.ASE_1.1.5), switching and reconfiguration of the system have become a central task, conducted from a central SMC system.
Important systems like transmitters or receivers provided in pairs; an operational part, and a fall-back part, in the receiver case running in the background on an artificial load. Operational and backup system regularly switch. In case of an error, the system can automatically or manually switch over to the healthy device. Replacing parts is still important but not that time critical anymore. It can be delegated to an external service provider.
New decentralized and interoperable architectures often rely on such remote servicing, as the systems may be located far away from the ATSEP in charge, sometimes even in a different country.
